Description:

A 2 sheet panorama of Hong Kong looking west. A cross section of the city showing the Mid-Levels, Public Gardens and Government House. To the left is Victoria Peak and In the distance is the Harbour, Lantao and  Stonecutter's Island.

 

Afong Lai was one of the first Chinese photographers to set up a studio in Hong Kong. He gained a reputation as being one of the most skilled photographers working in the late 19th century in China. The notable Scottish photographer, John Thomson, held Afong in high regard and complimented him on his work.

The London Antiquarian booksellers Quaritch had a similar panorama which they attributed to Afong Lai. It had an Afong number 1039 verso.

 

This panorama is not recorded in the list of Afong  in Bennett, History of Photography in China / Chinese Photographers 1844 - 1879.
