An attracive seventeenth century map of South East Asia in good early colour. Showing the area from Southern Japan to Northern Australia and acoss the Indian Ocean to India. Pakan olim I. Formosa (Taiwan) has an interesting shape off the coast of China. The Dutchman Frederick de Wit [1648-1712] was born in Gouda. He was a map publisher, engraver and seller who worked in Amsterdam. In 1688 de Wit obtained a privilege from the States General to publish his maps. Atlases published after this date carry the marking "cum privilegio". His geographical maps were famous and continued to be published long after his death. The copper plates from his Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas of c.1675 were used by Louis Renard for Atlas de la Navigation 1715. These plates later passed to R. & J. Ottens.
