Norie began as a draughtsman at William Heather's chart publishing business. In 1812 he took over Heather's business with George Wilson as his financial partner, trading as Norie & Co. In 1819 they took over Steel & Co. another chart publisher. In 1824 the firm became agents for the sale of Admiralty charts.
