Description:
The map was produced by the Edinburgh firm of John Batholomew & Co. It was drawn and engraved for the Directory and Chronicle. The Chronicle & Directory for China, Japan, Straits Settlements, Indo-China, Philippines and was published in Hong Kong by one of the oldest dailies in the Far East. The China Directory was published by Hong Kong Daily Press Ltd from 1865.
This city plan was published in 1874 which was the year of one of the most destructive typhoons on record in both Hong Kong and Macau. The typhoon which swept over Hong Kong, Macao, and neighbouring parts of China during the night of Tuesday, September 22nd, 1874, was in many respects the most terrible within memory. Beginning shortly before midnight on Tuesday, it continued until about four o'clock on the Wednesday morning. Though of comparatively short duration, this Typhoon seems to have exceeded any previous visitation of the kind, in the loss of life, destruction of shipping, and the damage to property, which were caused.
