Description:
The earliest commercial city plan of Hong Kong showing the extent of 25 years of construction of the city of Victoria on the northern coastline of the island. The main roads and major buildings are shown. Also a grid is shown on the Causeway Bay waterfront for potential reclamation. This reclamation did not take place until 1949.
The plan was published in, "The Treaty Ports of China and Japan", 1867. A note in the Preface states, "Of the maps (also) many are entirely original, and even if regarded only as the pioneers of more complete plans, will possess at least some value". Also, "The type has been set in great part by Chinese compositors, while the maps have all been engraved by natives." The map was therefore done by a Chinese engraver after information provided by the authors.
