Description:

An attractive early miniature map of the Philippines (titled above in German, Die Phillipinische Inseln Fig.LIV.) together with a miniature view of Manila (titled above in German, Die Stadt Manille Fig.LV.).

 

These two unusual and charming late 17th century engravings were published by Johann David Zunner in Frankfurt from 1684. They were based on the original engravings done by Alain Manesson Mallet, the year before, in 1683 in Paris.

 

There is no text on the verso of either engraving.

 

Allain Manesson Mallet [1630-1706] was a French engineer who travelled widely. In Paris in1683, he published a five volume book entitled, Description de L'Univers. The work was extesively illustrated with nearly 700 engravings, including miniature maps, charts , plans and views.

 

Johann David Zunner was a German publisher working in Frankfurt in the late 17th century.
