On September 2nd 1937 a strong typhoon or super typhoon hit Hong which was one of the most powerful and devastating typhoons to do so. Wind speeds of around 167mph were calculated by the Hong Kong Observatory. The tide rose 13 feet against 7 feet 6 inches normal height. The Praya being under water which came up as high as Des Voeux Road. The Post Office basement and shops in Connaught Road were flooded. The force of the wind caused small fish to be blown many yards from the sea on to buildings 20 feet above the ground.

During the typhoon a tidal wave overwhelmed the fishing village of Tai Po, New Territories, and demolished practically all the buildings and fishing boats causing heavy loss of life. The wave was said to be 18 feet high, and swept into Tide Cove and washed away almost a mile of the railway embankment, the service to Canton was suspended for 10 days.

The typhoon was the severest on record since 1841.
