Description:
Universi Orbis Descriptio ad Usum Navigantium is a mariners' world map. It comes from a quarto edition of Ptolemy edited by the distinguished Italian geographer Giovanni Magini.
This map was first published in 1596 in Venice. This particular map was published in Arnhem in 1617.
This map is based on Gerard Mercator's large world map of 1569 on a reduced scale with fictitious mountain ranges added across the southern continent. The network of rhumb lines are still evident on this map.
