The Harbour of Hong Kong, from the garden of Green Bank

According to Edward H. Cree, Surgeon, R.N. in his book The Cree Journals,  "The Pagoda House, home of Dent the merchant, was the first English residence built in Hong Kong".

Inscribed below the painting, "The Harbour of Hong Kong, from the garden of Green Bank". Patrick Conner writes, "The pagoda-roofed house of John and Wilkinson Dent at Green Bank was reputedly the first English residence to be built at Hong Kong. It had a celebrated garden including a number of plants which had been moved in 1845 from Thomas Beale's garden in Macau and replanted here. Smith's view may have been based on a drawing by Robert Fortune, who described the place in his book, A Journey to the Tea Countries, 1852."

Lt.-Col. Charles Hamilton Smith {1776 - 1859} was an English army officer, artist , illustrator and naturalist. The Victoria and Albert Museum London have some of his drawings and watercolours.
