Title:
Foreign Factories at Canton with flags flying
Date:
c1855
Medium:
oil on canvas
Size:
45 x 78 cm
Description:
An atmospheric painting of the Foreign Factories at Canton. Four flags are flying above the American, French, British and Danish Hongs. There is a small church to the right of the picture. The trees in the park in front of the Hongs appear well established. Many junks, sampans and a flowerboat appear on the river in the foreground.
This view would probably have been painted in one of the artist's studios behind the Western Hongs, or Foreign Factories. These Hongs were set on fire in December 1856 and were destroyed.
