Description:

The American Barque Alcyon leaving Hong Kong titled ‘BARK ALCYON LEAVING HONG KONG F. E. PATTERSON COMMANDER.’ (lower centre)

A fine China Trade painting of an American ship in Hong Kong Harbour in an original carved Chinese hardwood frame. The painting was done by a Chinese artist who probably had a studio on Queen's Road. Early photographs of the Queen's Road around this date show a number of artists' studio signs.

The American bark Alcyone was launched at Stockton; Maine in December 1865. At the time of this portrait, around 1870, Alcyone was under the command of Captain F.F. Patterson. This view shows the China Trader at full sale in Hong Kong Harbour with Victoria Peakand Hong Kong Island as a backdrop. Portrayed by the Chinese artist under full sail from a windward perspective; the vantage point would be somewhere on the Kowloon waterfront looking across the harbour towards the Island in a southerly direction.
