Description:

Eduard Hildebrandt was a German artist who visited Hong Kong in 1863. Two of the watercolours he painted during his visit were later published as beautiful chromolithographs in Berlin in 1868. One was of Queens Road and the other was of Pirate Street, one of the narrow roads running down the hill, possibly Cochrane Street or Peel Street. These two pictures were among the earliest views of Hong Kong to be exhibited in Germany and England. Such views were almost unique and certainly scarce. As a result in the late 19th century there were various copies made of these two views.

We have had 2 or 3 watercolours of the Queens Road after Hildebrandt, by different artists, some even signed, but this is the first time we have had an oil painting of the subject. This particular oil painting is unsigned and although quite well painted I do not believe it was painted by Hildebrandt as the artist does not seem able to identify and paint the sedan chairs that lined the streets at that time.

A charming and scarce  late 19th century painting of Queen's Road in 1863 by a later hand. Framed
