Description:
A view down Central Avenue on Shameen (Shamian) Island, Canton (Guangzhou). The photograph was taken in the late 19th century. A Western man appears on an upper balcony to the right looking down at the photographer.
Shameen was the location of the foreign concession which was developed from the early 1860s. Colonial buildings can still be seen on the island today. In this late nineteenth century view the spire of the Roman Catholic Church in the French Concession is visible to the right in the distance.
