Description:
Sir Richard MacDonnell was the Governor of Hong Kong from March 1866 - April 1872. When he arrived the colony was close to bankruptcy. In order to rectify this he cut back expenditure and he introduced an unpopular stamp duty.
He is represented in 2 of these drawings as "Sir Dick" and appears with exaggerated moustache. The line drawings appear similar in style to those done by J. B. Coughtrie and E. Beart for the China Punch in 1867.
Much of China Punch related to local individuals, their business and local politics but there is also some comment on international affairs.
These photographs were possibly taken by Silveira & Co., who took over from S.W. Halsey & Co, set up in January 1866. The business was sold to William Pryor Floyd in early 1867.
