Description:

A studio portrait of a seated Chinese lady. The photograph appeared in an edition of "The Far East".

 

To complete -

The photograph was taken by John Reddie Black. Black was the editor of The Far East which ran in two series from May 1870 until October 1875, then from July 1876 until 1878.

In 1876 Black returned to Shanghai to take photos for his publication. He recalls he last visited Shanghai in June 1864.One of the photos he took was of Merchant's wife, Shanghai.
