Title:

Morrison Hill and the Cemetery at Happy Valley

Date:

c1860

Medium:

albumen print

Size:

26 x 34 cm

Description:

A very unusual early large plate albumen photograph of Morrison Hill and the Protestant Cemetery in Happy Valley. The Chapel of the Resurrection has bamboo scaffolding and there are two further outbuildings beside it. The photograph can be dated to 1860 because the chapel was restored 1859-1860 and there is bamboo scaffolding still in place in the picture.

Early photographers are Dutton & Michaels, Weed and Howard or Milton Miller who were all working in Hong Kong in the early 1860s. Felix Beato also visited in 1860.

Possibly taken by Weed and Howard in 1860 towards the end of the second Opium War although it has been recently suggested that it may have been taken by a visiting soldier who took photographs at the same time as Felix Beato in 1860.
