Hong Kong - Panorama of the city of Victoria from the Harbour

Date:

c.1888

Medium:

albumen print

Size:

19.5 x 50 cms.

Description:

A two-sheet photographic panorama of the City of Victoria from the Harbour.

The photographs were taken just before work started on the Chater reclamation in Central. The waterfront or Praya became modern day Des Voeux Road. To the left is the new building of Hong Kong and Shanghai bank that was completed in 1886. Many of the major trading companies had premises along the waterfront. A useful index to these buildings was a print of a similar view published in the Graphic Magazine in 1887 after a photograph by D.K. Griffiths.

On the hill behind can be seen the earthworks for the new Peak Tram that was opened in 1887. The Peak tramway was inaugurated in May 1888. To the right of centre is the distinctive white building of the new Roman Catholic Cathedral completed in 1887. The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception was also inaugurated in 1888.

This photograph may have been taken by D.K. Griffiths.
