Title:

Chinese Mandarins

Date:

1596

Medium:

copper engraving

Size:

25 x 32.2 cms.

Description:

A  late sixteenth century engraving of Mandarins in China. The faces are quite European looking which is understandable as the engraver had probably never seen a Chinese person at that time. This engraving was printed in Amsterdam in 1596 in his book, Itinerario, voyagie, ofte Ship-vaert which was published by Claesz.

The Dutchman, Jan Huygen van Linschoten (c.1563 -1611) was secretary to the Portuguese archbishop in Goa from 1583 - 1588. He interviewed many of the earliest mariners and travellers to the Far East during that time. This was the basis for his book Itinerario that he wrote when he returned to Amsterdam.
