A view towards the Franciscan Monastery at the far end of the Praia Grande. One of the earliest buildings in Macao built by the Spanish Franciscan friars in the 1580s. Later taken over by the Portuguese Franciscans.
Macao removed its religious male orders in 1835. All assets belonging to the Franciscans were taken by the Macau authorities. It is likely that they removed the cross at the top of the stairs in front of the monastery at this time.
The Franciscan Monastery was demolished in 1861.
The Military Club of Macau would be built in 1870 on the site of the building that appears below the Monastery.
