An unusual and attractive lithograph showing Canton in the early 1860s. The artist drew the picture from outside the old city wall.
The artist was part of a Prussian expedition to East Asia, China and Japan 1859 -1862. This lithograph was published in Die Preussiche Expedition nach Ost-Asian aus Japan, China and Siam 1864. The Prussian Expedition to East Asia followed the treaty at Yeddo between the Americans and the Shogun which allowed foreigners to settle in Japan. The expedition also visited Hong Kong, Macau and Canton. The chromolithographs and photolithographs published by Korn & Co. are among the finest to appear of this area.
