A well drawn and engraved view of Macau in the late eighteenth century. This engraving is from the French edition of "Voyages made in the Years 1788 and 1789 from China to the North West Coast of America ...", by John Meares. According to Lust the view of Macao is from an aquatint copy of a sketch made on the spot.

John Meares was engaged in the fur trade from the North West Coast of America to China, more specially to Macao at the end of the eighteenth century. His discoveries in Oregon and British Columbia had important political repercussions, contributing to a crises between Spain and Great Britain over Nootka Sound. One of the immediate consequences was the Vancouver Expedition of 1791-5.
