Description:
Siege of Malacca by admiral Cornelis Matelief. The Dutch go ashore with long boats from the ships and march on the walled city of Malacca in the upper left of the picture. Even though this is more of a view and much smaller than the atlas maps of Blaeu, Hondius or Ortelius, it is still a highly detailed and delightful view, and considered one of the earliest of this region.
On the verso is the naval battle for Malacca between the VOC fleet and the Portuguese, 1606. A schematic depiction of the naval confrontation between the fleets of Cornelis Matelieff de Jonge and Pedro Mascarenhas off Cape Rachado. The Latin entry “Matlivij naves 12” refers to the ships of Admiral Matelieff, while the “Lusitanicae naves” refers to the Portuguese armada.
An entire leaf from the scarce book by Pontanus ‘Rerum et urbis Amstelodamensium Historia’ (1611).
