Description:
The Frenchman, Pierre Sonnerat drew this view of the foreign factories in Canton in the 18th century.
Sonnerat travelled to India and China between 1774 - 1781. He wrote a book decribing the journey, "Voyage aux Indes Orientales et La Chine, fait par ordre du Rois, depuis 1774 jusqu' en 1781" which was published in 1782. The volume of plates was issued with the 1806 revised issue entitled, "Collection de planches pour servir au voyage aux Indes Orientales et la Chine". It contained a dozen engravings concerning China mostly plants and birds which were probably after Chinese originals.
