Bate, Lieut., Hong Kong, June 15th / 45.

This early view of Hong Kong may havebeen taken from Hollywood Road near the top of Cochrane Street which was just a path at this time. To the right is the spire of the first Roman Catholic Cathedral of Immaculate Conception which was built in 1843 and burnt down in 1859.

The drawing was done by Lieut. William Thornton Bate while surveying the area on the Young Hebe, under the command of Captain Richard Collinson, H.M.S. Plover.

This exceptionally rare engraving pre-dates the views of Hong Kong by Murdoch Bruce which were done in 1846.

Commander Richard Collinson in HMS Plover together with Lt. Henry Kellett in HMS Starling was involved with mapping Hong Kong and the China Coast 1842 - 1846. Lt. William Thornton Bate assisted with the surveying. A number of significant charts were produced upon which all succesors were based.
