Description:

Signed in the plate, W.Alexander fecit. London Published Oct. 12th 1797 by G. Nicol, Pall Mall.

"These ships venture as far as Manila, Japan and even Batavia ..... and many of them are from 800 to 1,000 tons burthen ..... No alteration has been made in the naval architecture of China for many centuries past ..... On each bow is painted an eye with the pupil turned forwards; perhaps with the idea of getting up some resemblance to a fish;

or from a superstitious notion that the ship may thus see before her and avoid danger."
