Description:
Harbour of Hong Kong. after a painting by Thomas Allom. Engraved by S, Bradshaw. Published by Fisher, Son & Co., London & Paris.
The English artist Thomas Allom based this picture on an earlier drawing made by the French artist Auguste Borget in 1838. Borget spent part of 1838 and 1839 living in Macau where he produced some attractive drawings and watercolours of the port and the surrounding area. He visited Kowloon and Hong Kong three years before the British settled on the island in 1841.
The Englishman Thomas Allom, architect and architectural draughtsman, produced fine drawings of Chinese landscapes, architecture and local life which were then engraved to illustrate a book entitled, China Illustrated, which was published in London in 1843. He became famous for these beautiful illustrations despite the fact that he never visited China and based his work on artists that had done pioneering work over the previous 50 years.
