Description:
Sale of English Goods, Canton. After C. Wirgman. Published in The Illustrated London News May 22nd 1858.
This scarce beautiful chromolithograph was published after a sketch watercolour sent by the roving artist correspondent, Charles Wirgman, to the ILN in London. Between 1857 - 1860 Wirgman was working and visiting China, including, Hong Kong, Canton and Peking as well as a visit to Manila and the Philippines.
Some of the pictures that arrived in England had titles that people in the magazine were not used to and became confused. A close inspection of this picture reveals that this is in fact Manila. Most of the traders are dressed in stripy shirts and are smoking cigars. The architecture is Spanish colonial. The scene is quite possibly taking place in Binondo which is the Chinese quarter to the north of Intramuros and the Pasig River.
The picture that appears on page 272 in the Canton section of The Chater Collection has been cropped.
