Description:
This view of Canton was copied from the engraving of 1665 produced for Jan Nieuhoff to illustrate a Dutch Embassy to China in 1655. Information on China in Europe was limited in the in the seventeenth and eighteenth century which led to views from Nieuhoff and Du Halde being reproduced in various ways.
In the Chater Collection this engraving was incorrectly dated 1655 and attributed to Nieuhoff but was in fact a later English copy of c.1752 by George Child.
George Child was an English engraver working in London in the mid eighteenth century. He engraved a number of maps for the English edition of Jean Baptiste Du Halde's, "A Description of the Empire of China...". 1738 - 1741.
He also engraved maps and views for Thomas Salmon, "The Universal Traveller: or a compleat description of the several nations of the world", 1752-53.
