Louis de Camoens was born at Lisbon about 1524, and owing to resentment at not receiving recompense for wounds at the siege of Ceutahe embarked for Goa 1553. He was later banished to Macao for satyrical writings and severe criticisms of the local government and while there he wrote the "Lusiad'. After five years' sojourn in Macao he returned to Lisbon and died in 1579, the prey to pverty and suffering.
