Lord Macartney led a British embassy to China 1793-1795. A large entourage accompanied him including doctors, engineers and artists. William Alexander was one of the artists with the embassy. His hard work and prolific output captured pictures of people and places in China in the late eighteenth century.
William Alexander was one of the earliest professional artis to visit China. This "View of the Western Gates" was one of the only views he did of Peking (Beijing).
