One of the great nineteenth century voyages of circumnavigation was undertaken by the French ship La Bonite in 1836 and 1837 under the command of Auguste Nicolas Vaillant. Vaillant {1793 - 1858} later became a Rear Admiral in 1849 and eventually Minister of Marine in 1851. There were a few  artists who recordeded the voyage including, Fisquet, Paris, Lauvergne and Darondeau. They  produced a number of sketches of places visited and some of these were later published as a series of beautiful lithographs in Voyage autour du monde execute pendant les annees 1836/1837 sur la corvette la Bonite.
